Photograph: "Elliott House" 1216 West Sycamore, Kokomo, c. 1903. Black & white, 4A-5 (Negative No., 3-1/2" x 5". The Elliott House was built in the Queen Anne style in 1889 by Mart Williams, an early Kokomo industrialist. He and Monroe Seiberling purchased 12 lots west of town upon which to build homes. Williams sold the house to Matthew Elliott, manager of the Diamond Plate Glass Company. It is for him that the house is named. Elliott died in 1919 due to injuries received in a probable mugging in Marion. His wife, Lulu, remained in the house until selling it to Mark Brown in 1925. Mr. Brown promptly remodeled the house in 1926 to the Tudor style it is today. Indiana University purchased the house in 1953 to expand its campus in Kokomo. Elliott House was used as administration offices for the campus and also housed the library and bookstore. After the IU Kokomo campus was opened in 1965, Elliott House was used for classes until 1972. From then until 1993, it was used as the Youth Intake Center. After that, the house was empty until 1998. Indiana University Kokomo transferred ownership of the Elliott House to Howard County in 1997 when it then became part of the Howard County Historical Society. Today, the Elliott House can be rented for meeting space, weddings, and a variety of other functions. Information from Then and Now exhibit. R. Smith, 19 Sep 2013. |
